THEY'RE ONE OF THE FASTEST-GROWING
COMMUNITY COLLEGES. BUT IT
NO LONGER REFERS TO THE ENERGY BILLS.
Retrofitting a Community College
Making campuses more energy efficient helps keep costs down – and maybe test scores up. Because more comfortable classrooms make learning easier. So this Performance Contracting project we handled for a well-known Energy Service Company had a double benefit.
Refurbished control systems in the classrooms signaled the end of opening windows or peeling off layers in winter. New, high-energy efficiency motors on the largest pumps and air-handling units brought quiet comfort campus-wide in summer. And 420 Photovoltaic Solar panels offset a whopping 112,275 Kilowatt-Hours of electricity that the college otherwise would have had to purchase from the local utility – a dramatic cut.
All told, this project saved 28% on electricity, 31% on natural gas and 40% on water – good for about $450,000 a year. And was named “Best in New England” by the Association of Energy Engineers.
